HMS-style carabiners were popular when lead belaying using a Munter Hitch was common. The acronym HMS translates from the German term “Halbmastwurf-Sicherung”, which means belaying with a Munter hitch. In tree work, the HMS or pear-shaped carabiner makes an ideal carabiner at the end of a work positioning lanyard. The broad top bar provides space for the hitch (if needed), while the narrow part offers stability for the attached lanyard. Compactness is also essential; NOTCH has the dimensions perfect for the NOTCH HMS.
