DMM shows us how to break Dyneema and Nylon slings

DMM shows us how to break Dyneema and Nylon slings

In order to make an informed choice regarding the type of gear you are prepared to climb on, in this case slings, you need to have as much information as possible.

To assist climbers in this quest for information, DMM have conducted a series of dynamic 'drop' tests to compare the relative performanceof an 11mm Dyneema sling verses 16mm Nylon sling. A 80kg mass (the weight used for EN testing) was dropped with a fall factor of 1 and 2 on both typesof sling, in various lengths. An overhand knot was also introduced, to see how the relative performance was effected.

Dyneema/Spectra slings are common in NZ tree-work climbing configurations. The Aspiring 22kN Spectra sling,in various lengths, is a top seller at Treetools. (Dyneema and Spectra are identical in chemistry: Dyneema is made by Honeywell in the US and Spectra ismade by DSM in the Netherlands so there will be slight differences due to production inconsistencies between the two manufacturing processes).
