Major tree climbing showdown later this week in Singapore

Major tree climbing showdown later this week in Singapore

Richard Tregoweth - Monday, June 13, 2011

Who will win the Asia-Pacific Regional TCC later this week?

The Asia-Pacific Regional TCC is the last chance for climbers to represent their country with a starting position in the 2011 International Tree Climbing Championships scheduled for Sydney, July 23-24.

New Zealand has a formidable team attending this years Regional event.

The NZ mens team includes Treescape Auckland climbers Jawand Nga Chun and Tumai Laybourn , Thoughplanter Andy Neverman, reigning NZ champ Scott Forrest and returning Asia-Pacific Regional champion James Kilpatrick. Ross Kite, who performed so well in the 2010 New Zealand NTCC and more recently in the 2011 Australian NTCC, will also compete.

NZ woman climber Elena O'Neill is unable to attend so we are down one on the womens team but Chrissy Spence, Nicky Ward-Allen (sponsored by Brendon Bellamy's Tricky Trees) and international rookie Stef White (Treescape Hamilton) are to represent the country.

The aussies will be in Singapore in full force, driven by the desire to have as many Australian climbers as possible in the International TCC on their home turf. The cunning buggers have scheduled their major state comps and national tree climbing championship as close as possible to the Asia-Pacifc's and the World's to ensure their climbers are 'match fit' - or… have they peaked too early?

Then of course there are the local, relatively unknown, Singapore climbers and those from Japan and Hong Kong who are just as motivated as the kiwis and the aussies to gain a place at the World's.

This international showdown should make the 2011 Asia-Pacific Regional TCC a very interesting tree climbing competition indeed.

Neal Harding has agreed to act as the official NZ team photographer so he'll keep us posted - thanks Neal!
