Knots can decrease a rope's strength by as much as 50%. Properly performed splices retain as much or more than 90% of new rope strength. The safest way to join two ropes, or to form an eye at the end of the rope is with a splice. These videos cover splicing techniques for the most commonly spliced Class I and Class II ropes offered by Samson - but the principles apply to all ropes of similar construction. Class I splices are applied to ropes made of the following fibers; polyolefin, polyester or nylon - Class II splices are applied to ropes constructed of high modulus fibers like Dyneema, Vectran, Technora or PBO (Zylon).
