Christchurch to ETCC Champion in five years

Christchurch to ETCC Champion in five years

Richard Tregoweth - Thursday, September 04, 2014

Here's a little bit of NZ tree climbing history for you. Almost five years ago Matt Glen, won the 2009 South Island Regional TCC in Christchurch - see previous blog post here.

Last weekend, in Poland, Matt won the prestigious 2014 European TCC following his success in the UK competition earlier in the year.

Matt is well known in New Zealand for the 'Open Masters' events he organized in and around Auckland during the 2009 - 2012 period.

The 'Open Masters' concept was also successfully implemented by Nicky Ward-Allen following this years Wellington Regional TCC in Bulls.

Check the numbers

Have a look at the number of climbers who turned up at Hagley Park back in 2009 - it would be good to see the same turnout at this weekends comp in Bottle Lake Reserve, Christchurch (although competitor numbers of that size can test the event organisers ability to the max).

And check out the other top five competitors from 2009 - Drew Bristow, Jewand Ngau-Chun, Menno Kluiters and Johno Smith.

Not to be outdone by his young protege we believe Mr Bristow is gunning a wild card entry into the 2014 NZ Arb/Husqvarna TCC (Rotorua) after a stella performance in a recent 'by-invitation-only' US tree climbing competition.

On the subject of the 2014 NZ Arb/Husqvarna National TCC - this year should make for a very interesting competition - Treetools believe there might be an opportunity for a new player to attend the 2015 ITCC - more info soon.
