Safety recall for Rock Exotica Enforcer

Safety recall for Rock Exotica Enforcer

Richard Tregoweth - Saturday, December 17, 2016

Rock Exotica has issued a product recall for the Enforcer load cell. The swivel eye on some Enforcers may not be secure and in certain conditions might unscrew. Modifications to the device will improve the security of the swivel eye.

This safety recall is the result of an incident where a user swaged their Enforcer to a steel cable. As the cable was loaded the wire rope unwound, twisting the Enforcer’s swivel eye inappropriately (the Enforcer swivelling action is for orientation, not high speed or multiple rotations). The friction generated in this set-up unscrewed the bolt holding the swivel eye to the body, and it came apart.

You can read more information from Rock Exotica here.

Which Enforcers are affected?

Enforcer units subject to recall used an epoxy/setscrew combination to secure the swivel, which includes all units manufactured before September 2nd, 2016.

Inspect the ten digits serial number on your device to determine whether your Enforcer is subject to recall.

As shown below, the first two digits of the number refer to the year of manufacture. The three digits following the year of manufacture refer to the day of manufacture during the year. All units indicating a manufacture date before 16246XXXXX (manufactured in 2016 on the 246th day of the year - September 2, 2016) are subject to recall.

All units produced ON or AFTER this date are NOT subject to recall. The serial number is laser engraved on the side or back of the device.

Rock Exotica requests affected units to be returned as outlined in the corresponding recall notice to replace the setscrew with a pin that goes through the aluminium part and into a hole in the steel bolt to provide additional security.

While the Enforcer is with Rock Exotica for this modification, they will re-calibrate the device to ensure future accuracy and send it back with a free Rock Exotica carabiner.

Next week Treetools will make contact with registered owners of Enforcers sold in New Zealand to arrange for bulk shipment back to Rock Exotica. If, for some reason, we do not have your records, please make contact with us via the 'contact' form on the website.
